COPS have launched an urgent probe after a “deliberate arson attack” saw a blaze break out at a home with a mum and young child inside.
Officers and firefighters raced to reports of an incident on Cleggswood Avenue in Rochdale, Manchester, at around 1.15am on September 6.
A mother and young child were asleep at their home on the road when a car was set alight on the driveway outside, Greater Manchester Police said
It was only because of the car alarm that the mother and child were saved, escaping with their pets, said cops.
One man, aged 42, was arrested on suspicion of stalking and conspiracy to commit arson.
He has been bailed pending further enquiries.
No one was hurt during the incident, but the family has been left traumatised, “shaken and deeply affected by what happened”.
Officers are now looking to speak to the owner and/or occupants of a vehicle, which they have shared an image of.
Police believe they believe could hold vital information relating to the investigation.
DC Mel Jeffery from the division said: “This was a terrifying and deliberate attack that could have ended in tragedy. A mother and her young child were asleep in their home when their car was set alight on the driveway, just outside the front door.
“The flames quickly spread to the front of the house, and it was only thanks to the car’s alarm that they were able to escape safely with their pets.
“The trauma they’ve experienced is unimaginable. They are safe, but shaken and deeply affected by what happened.
“We believe this was a targeted incident, and while there is no wider threat to the public, we are determined to find those responsible.
“I’m urging anyone who lives or works in the area to check their CCTV, doorbell footage, or dashcam recordings from around the time of the incident on 6 September. Even the smallest detail could be the missing piece we need.
“If you saw or heard anything unusual, or if you have any information at all—please come forward. Help us bring justice to this family and ensure those responsible are held accountable”.
If you have information, you can contact police via 101 or our Live Chat service at gmp.police.uk, quoting log 205 of 06/09/25.
