I tested three brown mascaras for defined lashes – one option was a 10/10

BROWN mascara is the ideal everyday option when you want definition for your lashes but don’t want to make a bold statement.

It’s great for those with fair skin, like me.

Here are three of the best

BUDGET

Catrice Hyper Lash Mascara 020 Speedy Brown, £5.99 for 11ml, boots.com

The Catrice Hyper Lash Mascara 020 Speedy Brown is a great everyday option

This was the cheapest brown mascara I could find – so my expectations were low.

The large fibre brush is intimidating, but separates lashes nicely and ensures they are coated from root to tip.

One sweep of the brush gives a natural, polished look but you can build up a few layers for more volume without clumping lashes together and making them look spidery, which is always my worry with a brush this size.

The formula is almost whipped, so it’s not too wet, and once dry, it feels weightless.

A great everyday option.

MID-RANGE

UKLash Tubing Mascara in Mocha Brown, £16 for 7ml, uklash.com

Th UKLash Tubing Mascara in Mocha Brown is a real hit

Before this got near my lashes, I knew it was going to be a hit.

With black mascara, tubing formulas are always my go-to for smudge-proof staying power that’s easy to remove at the end of the day.

But that same tech has been lacking from brown shades. Until now.

Lash expert UKLash has managed to fill that void.

Its formula instantly lengthens lashes and helps keep them curled and lifted all day, without flaking off or leading to panda-eyes.

The tapered wand makes it easy to catch the short lashes in the corner of my eye closest to my nose, and the formula also contains caring shea butter and arginine to keep lashes conditioned. 10/10.

LUXURY

YSL Lash Clash Extreme Volume Mascara Brown, £30 for 8ml, boots.com

The YSL Lash Clash Extreme Volume Mascara Brown is perfect if you want dramatic, thick lashes

Given subtle lashes are the main aim of brown mascara, I wasn’t sure how I’d get on with this OTT volumising option.

Unsurprisingly, YSL knows what its doing, and I quickly fell head over heels for the finish.

This gave me dramatic, thick lashes in just one layer – so much so, they almost looked fake.

So it’s great for when you want extra oomph without investing loads of time.

The formula doesn’t clump or crumble and the rich brown colour – the darkest of the three – makes my green-blue eyes pop.

I now reach for this over my old black mascara on special occasions.
