Work is due to start at the roundabout of the motorway and at the A453, at junction 24 in Leicestershire.

The work will continue every night from Monday until October 2.

The M1 northbound exit slip road, the A453 slip road to the airport and the roundabout to the A50 will be closed between 9pm and 5am.

A spokesperson from National Highways said diversions would be in place.

Drivers have been urged to allow extra time for their journeys.

This road closure comes after a chaotic weekend as normal traffic from another busy motorway was diverted.

The stretch of road that is used by over 180,000 drivers a day was shut down over the weekend to allow engineers to drop a massive HS2 viaduct into place.

The closure happened near Birmingham, between Junction 4 and Junction 4A, with the M6 shut in both directions from 3am on Saturday, September 27, until 10pm on Sunday, September 28.

J7A of the M42 towards the M6 southbound was also closed and the road won’t reopen until the early hours of Monday morning.

The shutdown was booked in to allow engineers to drop a massive HS2 viaduct into place.

A spokesperson for HS2 said: “The M6 south viaduct will carry the new high-speed railway over the M6 motorway and adjoining slip road, near Birmingham Business Park, BHX and the NEC in Solihull.

The 320-metre “M6 south viaduct” will eventually carry high-speed trains over the motorway near Birmingham Airport, the NEC and Birmingham Business Park.

National Highways warned drivers to plan ahead, follow the signed diversion routes and allow extra time for journeys.
