Stormy skies expected over Gauteng with severe weather alerts

Gauteng will face another round of disruptive thunderstorms, with forecasters warning of cool temperatures, cloudy skies, and possible storm-related impacts.

Weather experts say most parts of the province will remain cloudy, with widespread thunderstorms expected throughout Sunday night and into Monday.

“It’s going to be mostly cloudy with cool temperatures and thunderstorms forecast for much of the day,” said Joel Guy, a forecaster.

Temperatures will remain on the lower side, with Springs reaching only 18°C, Johannesburg and Pretoria peaking around 21°C and 22°C.

Regional weather impact

The stormy system affecting Gauteng also extends into neighbouring provinces.

“We still have very unsettled weather gripping much of eastern South Africa, with scattered thunderstorms expected from Limpopo down into KwaZulu-Natal,” Guy explained.

In Mpumalanga, temperatures will drop even further, with highs of just 12°C in Ermelo and 17°C in Mbombela, raising concerns about travel and outdoor disruptions.

Warnings in Force

Authorities confirmed that a level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms remains in effect in parts of the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal. Gauteng residents are urged to stay vigilant as forecasters monitor conditions closely.

“There is a low likelihood of seeing severe storms, but if they do occur, the impacts could be significant,” Guy warned.

Emergency services encouraged road users to exercise caution, citing risks of slippery roads and poor visibility during peak travel times.
