If you think Johannesburg is just a concrete jungle, think again.
Did you know our beloved City of Gold has over 10 million trees? It is also dubbed as one of the world’s biggest man-made, or urban, forests.
In this article, you can find five parks where you can unwind and take a breather from the city’s buzz.
The Johannesburg Botanical Gardens
The Johannesburg Botanical Gardens are in the Emmarentia suburbs and span 125 hectares. The Emmarentia Dam is also a popular spot for canoeing and various water sports, including fishing. It’s also an ideal spot for joggers, walkers, and cyclists (be sure to look out for the designated areas). There are also picnic spots, dog walking areas, and parking areas.
Delta Park
Delta Park is on Craighall Road in Randburg. It’s ideal for nature enthusiasts and offers various ways to experience the fauna and flora. For example, through the bird hides, the bird sanctuary, walking trails, and the environmental centre. There is also a dam and picnic areas. Secure parking is available.
Golden Harvest Park
Located in the Northgate area in Randburg is Golden Harvest Park. It received a clean-up and clearing in 2024 and has a lot to offer. For runners and walkers, it also hosts free parkruns every Saturday. It welcomes dogs and anyone who wants to have a relaxing day out. Have a picnic or walk around the dam and enjoy some birdwatching.
The Wilds Nature Reserve
The Wilds, a nature reserve in Houghton, is another natural oasis for you to enjoy a quick escape from city life. Whether you want to picnic, hike, run, or simply enjoy the views, it has a bit of everything. The entrance is free, and parking is available. The West Wilds is recommended for first-time visitors to the park. The East Wilds is recommended for dog walkers and larger groups to walk.
James and Ethel Gray Park
James and Ethel Gray Park is in Melrose. It was ranked as the number one tranquil picnic spot in Gauteng by Getaway Magazine and offers some of the best-managed and maintained natural environments and facilities for city goers. Not to mention the amazing views of the city, the park has expansive green fields and pathways suitable for recreational activities, a kiddies playground, and a lake. It was previously a bird sanctuary and is a green gem in the heart of Gauteng.
As always, it’s advised to first visit the respective parks’ websites for more information about opening times, rules, and regulations.
