South Africans will now need an e-visa to visit this African country

South African travellers will now face a new requirement when visiting one East African nation: an e-visa application before boarding their flights.

The requirement, which began on 1 September 2025, will now see Somalia’s immigration authorities replace the old on-arrival visa process with a fully digital system.

Applicants will need to apply online through a dedicated portal, with approvals issued electronically.

Somalia introduces e-visa

Approved visas will be sent electronically, replacing the old paper-based process at Mogadishu’s Aden Adde International Airport and other entry points.

Somalia’s Ministry of Immigration and Federal Affairs says the system is aimed at streamlining travel, boosting border security, and ensuring revenue accountability. It also brings the country in line with international travel standards.

Certain groups are exempt, including holders of diplomatic passports, multiple-entry visa holders, UN staff with official travel documents, and nationals from countries with visa-free arrangements.

For South Africans, the key change is that visas can no longer be arranged on arrival. Travellers will now need to apply online in advance, making early planning essential.
