Is Oupa Brown Mogotsi still ANC? Party distances itself from him

The African National Congress (ANC) has officially distanced itself from Oupa Brown Mogotsi, confirming that his party membership has expired.

This follows explosive testimony at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, where Mogotsi was accused of using his alleged ANC ties to solicit money from criminals.

OUPA BROWN MOGOTSI USING ANC TO SOLICIT FUNDS FROM CRIMINALS

SAPS Crime Intelligence head, Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo, testified that Mogotsi actively invoked ANC credentials to secure cash from underworld figures.

Khumalo presented WhatsApp exchanges allegedly showing Mogotsi arranging payments for personal gain.

Khumalo also claimed that Mogotsi used some of the proceeds for ANC activities.

He also linked Mogotsi to businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, who allegedly paid thousands in return for protection and access to classified police documents.

ANC MEMBERSHIP RECORDS CONFIRM OUPA BROWN MOGOTSI AS NOT A MEMBER

“We now can confirm that Mr Mogotsi is therefore not an ANC member,” declared party spokesperson Mahlengi Bhengu.

The timing is no coincidence. With public scrutiny mounting, the ANC is moving swiftly to separate itself from any impression that it shelters criminal activities.

The party believes the allegations that Mogotsi is a member of the ANC are concerning and contribute to the undermining of the party’s credibility.

It further distances itself from criminal activities and behaviours.

The party’s Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula said the ANC cannot be associated with such characters.

He said this during a media briefing on 2 October 2025.

MEMBERSHIP STATUS AND RENEWAL FOR CRIMINALLY IMPLICATED INDIVIDUALS

According to the ANC’s constitution, it does not automatically block individuals implicated in crime from joining or renewing their membership.

Instead, it relies on internal members to object or on the Secretary-General to intervene on a discretionary basis.

Yet the party requires every new member to pledge that they are not joining the ANC for material gain or personal advantage.
