The futuristic new train station inspired by ‘mythical inferno’ that has opened in Europe

A UNIQUE looking train station has opened in Italy and it looks like its from another planet.

Just outside the city of Naples is where you’ll find the newly designed Monte Sant’Angelo Station.

It’s been 20 years in the making and was created by a sculptor[/caption]

The sculpture forms one of the entrances of the metro and is part of the urban and cultural regeneration project happening in Naples.

Artist Anish Kapoor was first invited to create a station for the new underground metro system in 2003 – and it finally opened in September 2025.

Anish Kapoor has designed other notable works like the ArcelorMittal Orbit in London‘s Olympic Park and the Sky Mirror installation in Kensington Gardens.

Talking about the station, Mr Kapoor said: “In the city of Mount Vesuvius and Dante’s mythical entrance to the Inferno, I found it important to try and deal with what it really means to go underground.”

The sculpture around the entrance is made from weathering steel, balloons up from the ground in an oval shape.

There are then two escalators leading down to the platforms – and downstairs, it does look like an ordinary underground station.

The new metro entrance has opened on the campus of the University of Naples Federico II in Naples.

The station connects the western area of Naples to the city center and the Phlegraean area.

It can provide access to the Cumana and Circumflegrea railways, as well as the Montesanto funicular and Line 2 metro.

The city of Naples is known for good food, and as one writer recently discovered, on a budget too.

Writer Lauren Clark ventured to the city and discovered award-winning margherita pizzas served up for just £3 at the many restaurants on its bustling streets.

She said: “For pizza, head to Sorbillo — it has won a ton of awards and been featured in the Michelin guide, yet serves margheritas for only £3.44.

“The city is also known for its pizza fritta (or fried pizza), which you can indulge in for just a few euros at the blink-and-you-miss-it tiny pizzeria Di Matteo, where Bill Clinton enjoyed a few slices during a presidential visit

“The waiters at Trattoria da Nennella, in the Quartieri Spagnoli neighbourhood, spontaneously erupt into song and dance. The sound-track of Italian pop music is as cheesy as the tasty dishes placed on the gingham-clothed tables.

“Two courses and sides will set you back just £12.80.”

For even more train stations, here are Sun Travel’s prettiest train stations in the UK, with beachfront views, champagne bars and on-site museums.

Plus, the world’s most beautiful train station revealed and passengers say it’s ‘like being in the Sound of Music’.
