Steamy movie scenes that landed stars in the doghouse – from Sydney Sweeney scandal to kiss that left Will Smith raging

WE all love a steamy film – unless it’s your partner on screen, that is.

Most actors’ real-life other halves don’t have any trouble with their beau getting it off with their co-stars on set.

After all, they’re professional – and they know they’re just pretending.

But sometimes, the on-screen chemistry is just a bit too hot to handle… or behind-the-scenes dramas get wildly out of hand.

Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s 19-year marriage now lies in tatters – and though the full details of the split aren’t known, speculation has mounted that his wife’s steamy sex scenes with the likes of Harris Dickinson and Zac Efron have something to do with it.

During a radio interview last summer, Keith reacted furiously when asked: “What does Keith Urban think when he sees his beautiful wife with beautiful younger men like Zac Efron having these beautiful love scenes?”.

Keith refused to reply – and swiftly left the interview without saying a word.

Only last year, Nicole admitted that while making Babygirl she had to pause filming because she was so turned on.

She said: “There was an enormous amount of sharing and trust and then frustration.

“It’s like: ‘Don’t touch me.’ There were times when we were shooting where I was like, ‘I don’t want to orgasm any more.’”

But it would be far from the first time that on-screen action broke the fourth wall.

Here, we take a look at some of the most famous scandalous blockbusters that spelled disaster for A-listers’ personal lives off-screen.

The 2001 blockbuster staring Angelina Jolie and Antonio Banderas certainly lived up to its name.

Although already jam-packed with steamy scenes, director Michael Cristofer would have included more if it weren’t for censors telling him to cut them.

It wasn’t long before rumours started swirling that Banderas’ wife Melanie Griffith was getting jealous of all the R-rated time Angelina was spending with her husband.

Though Angelina tried to shut down speculation and maintained she was friendly with Melanie, she ended up accidentally fanning the flames.

In an attempt to deflect, she said she’d rather get it on with Melanie than with him – a flippant comment that some were a bit too keen to take literally and send fan speculation swirling further.

“I was being playful. It was my way of saying that he’s married to a beautiful woman and I’d sooner sleep with her than have an affair with him,” Angelina later said.

Snaps of Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell on a yacht together sent the world into an absolute frenzy – and even though they were actually on-set filming the romcom Anyone But You, fans found it hard to believe the pair were fully acting.

Rumours of a romantic relationship between the pair swirled around for months, especially after a few cosy red carpet moments, but it later turned out it was all a PR stunt to help market the film.

One person, however, wasn’t happy, and understandably so – Glen’s girlfriend at the time, Gigi Paris.

Their relationship came to an end in April 2023, in the midst of filming, with her later telling the Too Much podcast how it came about.

“I could either pretend like I was going along with everything and have everyone wonder ‘Are they hooking up?’…or stand up for myeslf and say, no I’m actually not okay with this, and I’m walking away,” she said.

She also criticised him for not shutting down the rumours, and added: “Where are you when you just need to stand up and say, ‘No, I would never cheat on my girlfriend. That’s all that needed to be said.”

In the 2022 hit Don’t Worry Darling, Harry Styles starred opposite Florence Pugh – then just weeks later began a relationship with the film’s director, 41-year-old Olivia Wilde.

It quickly emerged that a feud was bubbling away however, with Florence avoiding almost all the publicity events for the film and not even turning up for a group interview before the film’s premiere.

Quite why was a mystery – until it was confirmed that Harry, 31, and Florence, 29, had shared a snog, with Florence left unhappy at how close he and Olivia were getting.

A source told The Sun: “Harry and Florence had chemistry from the off, which translated incredibly well on-screen.

“One night they had a bit of a snog, all very light-heated and a bit of fun, and that was that.

“However, later on, Harry and Olivia started spending more time together…it was clear to all they had a real connection. When they were pictured holding hands for the first time, Florence wasn’t too happy.

“There was already tension between the two women and this undoubtedly fanned the flames.”

Nor was Florence impressed by the sex scenes between Olivia and Harry, saying in an interview: “When it’s reduced to your sex scenes…to watch the most famous man in the world go down on someone… it’s not why we do it. It’s not why I’m in this industry.”

Will Smith’s Oscars slap no longer seems all that out the blue once you find out how he behaved on the set of 1998 romcom Woo, which his wife Jada was starring in.

According to Tommy Davidson’s memoir, who was starring opposite Jada, the trouble stemmed from when he pushed to change the film’s ending to include a cheerful dance scene.

Tommy then gave Jada an unexpected, unscripted kiss – and this didn’t go down well, not least because it caused Jada to flinch.

“You can’t just spring it on your co-star,” he wrote. “And I didn’t think it was all that big of a deal.”

Unfortunately for Davidson, Will disagreed – and was on set, following Davidson all the way to his trailer in such a rage that Jada had to intervene.

“Will went all gangsta on me, saying what I did was not cool,” Davidson wrote.

“There was a moment when we might have come to blows. My reactive fight-or-fight instinct was triggered and I could have exploded.”

The affair ended up destroying her marriage to singer Eddie Fischer[/caption]

The making of 1963 historical epic Cleopatra destroyed not one, but two marriages – but also created a new one.

Richard Burton had a reputation for seducing leading ladies and originally, Elizabeth Taylor was adamant about not becoming another notch in his belt, finding him arrogant.

Taylor was married at the time of filming to Eddie Fisher, while Burton himself was married to actress Sybil Burton – yet it only took filming one scene together for them to fall in love.

And they made little effort to hide their feelings in front of others on set either.

The very first kissing scene between the costars had to be reshot several times, though the kiss lasted longer and longer each take.

Shouts of “cut” from the director eventually fell on deaf ears, with the pair carrying on their kiss for much longer than they needed to.

Burton’s wife, Sybil, thought this affair would be like all the others he’d had – but she was wrong.

Meanwhile, Taylor’s husband Eddie Fisher one day called home only for Burton to answer.

“What are you doing in my house?” he asked. “What do you think I’m doing?” Burton answered: “I’m f***ing your wife.”

Fisher and Taylor divorced and the couple married in 1964.

‘Le Scandale’, as Burton called it, became a global phenomenon.

Burton and Taylor were known for their frequent break-ups and dramatic reunions, however, in August 1984 Burton died of a cerebral haematoma and Taylor died aged 79 in 2012.
