Why club legend Khune said no to Kaizer Chiefs

Itumeleng Khune left Kaizer Chiefs at the end of last season under a cloud of sorts, with the club’s most long-serving player making his departure at a time when he insisted there was still value he could add.

Ultimately, the club bosses at Chiefs felt he was no longer suited to an on-field role with the first team, and although Khune has not officially retired, it’s clear his playing days are behind him.

There was talk that Khune could still remain at the club by taking up a role possibly within the marketing department, but the legendary goalkeeper always wanted to prioritise a coaching position at the very least.

Having parted ways with the club, he has since been working as a pundit for SABC Sport and serving in a few ambassador roles.

What’s the real story between Kaizer Chiefs and Khune?

In an interview with Kick Off magazine, Khune has now suggested he wasn’t satisfied with the offer that Kaizer Chiefs made despite attempting to retain him in some capacity.

“I would have preferred to be a first team goalkeeper coach, but I was offered to go coach the U13s. So, obviously with me having been stressed for so many years carrying the team and now you have to go and shout at kids, and taking [out] all your frustrations on them, I was like no.

“Maybe in the future, I can become a club scout since I have an eye for talent. I thought those were the positions I would have been given at the club, but unfortunately, the club has their own plans.”
