The Society for Animals in Distress (SAID) in Midrand, Gauteng, is celebrating its 67th birthday in style later this month.
Since being founded in 1958, SAID has been delivering veterinary care to animals residing in low-to-no-income communities, particularly in informal settlements in Johannesburg’s north and northeastern areas. The society provides an average of 80 000 animal treatments annually.
In honour of its milestone birthday and to continue its vital work, SAID is hosting a fun-filled event later this month: Fur-tober Fest.
SAID’S FUR-TOBER FEST: IT’S ‘PAW-TY’ TIME
Per a recent Facebook post shared by SAID, the event starts at 11:00 and ends at 15:00 on Sunday, 26 October 2025.
It will take place at the corner of Anton Hartmann and Moerdyk Street in Midrand’s Vorna Valley suburb.
To gain entry, you can make a monetary donation of your choice at the door. These donations will go towards supporting SAID’s ongoing veterinary services.
FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
At Fur-tober Fest, you can visit the market, where you can discover hidden treasures or treat yourself to some delicious food.
There will also be music, fun-filled activities for the kids to enjoy, and chances for you to win fabulous prizes in competitions and raffles.
Plus, SAID will be launching its official 2026 calendar, which stars several of its “animal heroes”, so make sure you show your support by buying a copy.
SAID SAYS TO ‘BRING YOUR PUPS’

As a bonus, Fur-tober Fest is a dog-friendly event. This means your Best Furry Friend can tag along for what promises to be an exciting afternoon.
As outlined by SAID’s post, you can “bring your pups” so long as they’re kept on a leash.
