Severe weather warning for hail and floods in Gauteng

The City of Tshwane has issued a severe weather warning for Monday, 6 October, urging residents to prepare for potentially dangerous thunderstorms that could bring hail, heavy rain, and localised flooding.

The warning follows a Level 2 alert issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) for Gauteng and Mpumalanga, citing the influence of a cut-off low-pressure system expected to hit the region from 14:00 to 20:59.

What to Expect

According to the city’s statement, the following conditions may occur across much of Gauteng:

  • Heavy downpours leading to localised flooding in low-lying areas, flat terrain, and vulnerable roadways
  • Small hail in large quantities, particularly over open areas
  • Damaging winds capable of structural damage
  • Excessive lightning, increasing the risk of fires and electrocution
  • Traffic disruptions due to flooding, poor visibility, and slippery road conditions
  • Power outages and infrastructure damage, possibly affecting local services
  • Property damage, particularly to roofs in both formal and informal settlements

Safety Guidelines for Residents

City officials have urged residents to take precautionary measures, including:

  • Staying indoors during peak storm hours
  • Avoiding contact with metal objects like fences or power lines
  • Not sheltering under isolated trees or tall structures, which are more likely to attract lightning
  • Refraining from outdoor activities such as fishing or golf during storm activity

“To ensure personal safety and minimise damage, residents are urged to stay indoors where possible and avoid any structures or objects that can conduct electricity,” the city said.

Emergency Services on High Alert

Emergency response teams across Tshwane are on standby and will continue to monitor weather patterns closely. The city has promised a swift response to any weather-related incidents.

Motorists are advised to exercise extreme caution on the roads and allow extra travel time due to potential delays and road closures.

More Severe Weather Expected This Season

Meteorologists are warning of increased severe weather events in the coming months due to the growing likelihood of La Niña conditions, which bring wetter-than-usual weather to South Africa.

While the SAWS’ current five-month outlook still shows a chance of neutral conditions, the likelihood of La Niña developing by the end of 2025 has increased.
