Huguenot Tunnel reopened after bus catches fire

The N1 Huguenot Tunnel reopened to traffic at 06:00 on Thursday, following emergency repair works and intensive safety checks prompted by a bus fire incident last Friday.

The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (Sanral) confirmed the reopening, noting that all safety-critical systems have undergone comprehensive inspection and verification by both in-house engineers and independent specialists.

“The safety of road users remains our top priority,” said Randall Cable, Sanral’s Western Cape Provincial Head.

“The decision to reopen was taken only after a rigorous process to ensure all systems are fully functional.”

Temporary Speed Limit in Place

Although the Huguenot Tunnel will resume operations, motorists are advised to drive with caution, as the speed limit within the affected section will be temporarily reduced to 40km/h.

Sanral urged all drivers to strictly adhere to the reduced speed and remain vigilant as repair work continues in the background.

Permanent structural repairs to the damaged areas of the tunnel are still required and will be carried out during night time hours to minimise disruption to daily traffic.

Sanral has committed to communicating any future closures in advance.

Thanks to Emergency and Infrastructure Teams

Sanral extended its gratitude to emergency services, technical teams, and its partner stakeholders, including the Western Cape Department of Infrastructure and Department of Mobility, for their coordinated efforts in managing alternative routes and ensuring public safety during the tunnel’s closure.

Motorists planning to travel along the N1 are encouraged to stay informed through official traffic updates and proceed with extra caution during the early reopening phase.
