Parties welcome SIU raid on Maumela in Tembisa Hospital corruption saga

The African Transformation Movement (ATM) and GOOD party have commended a Special Investigating Unit (SIU) raid at businessman Hangwani Maumela’s Sandton home as a step toward justice in the Tembisa Hospital corruption case.

ATM said the seizure of luxury vehicles and other assets on Thursday would help recover some of the R2 billion allegedly embezzled by corrupt syndicates from the hospital.

The party also called for a thorough investigation into the syndicates behind the scandal.

Restore integrity of public institutions

“It is imperative that we restore integrity to our public institutions and ensure that those responsible for these heinous acts are held accountable,” national party spokesperson Zama Ntshona said in a statement.

GOOD party said the raid was “a step toward justice for Babita,” the whistleblower who exposed corruption at the hospital before she was murdered in August 2021.

The party called for swift prosecutions of those allegedly involved and called for stronger whistleblower protections.

“The life of Babita Deokaran was cut short for her role in attempting to expose those behind this looting,” the statement said.

“It must be honoured through prosecuting not only the businessmen alleged to have been involved, but also those politicians and public servants who allegedly facilitated this horrific corruption scandal.”

Prosecutions, system overhaul needed

Meanwhile, the General Industries Workers Union of South Africa (GIWUSA) called for prosecutions by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), full asset seizures and a system overhaul.

“The SIU must be supported in its efforts to identify, freeze, and forfeit all assets—from Lamborghinis to multi-million-rand properties—purchased with the proceeds of this corruption,” it said in a statement.

The union added that a review of all Gauteng hospitals is needed to uncover similar syndicates and improve service delivery.

Law enforcement officials raided Maumela’s Sandton home as part of efforts to recover part of R820 million linked to alleged large-scale corruption and tender fraud at the hospital.

Maumela is the nephew of President Cyril Ramaphosa from a previous marriage. Investigators said he allegedly used a network of supplier companies to divert public funds into inflated private contracts.

The raid, which followed court-approved orders to freeze and seize assets, authorities recovered a fleet of luxury vehicles and a high-value art collection.

Deputy government spokesperson William Baloyi said the seizures were part of government efforts to fight corruption.

“These operations fall within the normal scope of their mandate to investigate matters and recover assets,” he said in a statement.

“The public is reminded that such activities are a standard and essential part of government’s fight against corruption, ensuring accountability and upholding the rule of law.”
