John Gosden confirms his three big guns – including Field Of Gold – are on course for Champions Day at Ascot

JOHN GOSDEN says his three big guns are all on course for British Champions Day at Ascot next weekend.

And, whisper it, he would still be in with a squeak of bagging a seventh trainer’s title if he can end the season with a bang.

His star-studded squad will be spearheaded by Ombudsman in the Champion Stakes, with the Juddmonte International hero currently the 15-8 favourite for next Saturday’s big race.

The couple of international races, at the Breeders’ Cup and in Japan, were nominated as potential targets for the four-year-old, but with the weather set fair and the ground likely to be decent he will head to Ascot first.

Field Of Gold, who has been off since picking up a knock in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood, is also nearing his belated return in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, while Gold Cup winner Trawlerman is on target for the Long Distance Cup.

Gosden told Sun Racing: “They’re all coming up to their races well, I’m very happy with them. We just have to hope we get some nice ground next week for the first time in a very long time.

“It would be nice to be on the actual Flat track, it feels like we haven’t run on their with good ground for a decade.

“They are in their last pieces of their preparation now, so fingers crossed they’ll all be there.”

Each of the three has an outstanding chance on paper — the
treble only pays 15-1 — and if a couple of them hit the back of the net, Gosden will be right in the mix for the title.

He currently trails championship leader Aidan O’Brien by over a million quid, but there is a lot of money on the line in Ascot’s five Group 1s next weekend.

If Ombudsman lands the odds in the Champion Stakes, he will bank nearly £750,000 alone.

Gosden added: “It’s unlikely I’d say, Aidan will be very hard to stop. We’ve been very lucky in the championship over the years, we’ll move along and see how we go next week.”
