How to RENEW your vehicle licence in FOUR minutes

There’s a new way to renew your vehicle licence in the Western Cape. And Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis timed the process – from start to finish – at four minutes. Of course, we’re referring to the all-new drive-through that made headlines when it opened last month (September 2025).

Situated at the city’s Bracken Hall facility in Brackenfell, you don’t need to arrive with prior notice. Nor do you so much as set foot outside your car to renew your vehicle licence. The mayor insists the entire process took four-minutes flat, reports The Citizen.

Although, Bracken Hall city officials might have an axe to grind with the mayor all of a sudden. Because anyone who turns up and waits a second longer than four minutes will probably feel aggrieved. Nevertheless, the major wanted to show the efficiency with which you can now renew your vehicle licence in Cape Town.

“Well, I’m done. And here, you can see for yourself, it took me three minutes and 59 seconds. And I am out of here with my brand new licence renewed for another year. I encourage all residents to use the new drive-through facility to renew your vehicle licence,” said Hill-Lewis.

WHERE IS IT AND WHEN IS IT OPEN?

The drive-through centre is located on the corner of Reservoir and Kruispad roads in Brackenfell. The facility operates Mondays to Fridays from 11h30 to 19h30. And on Saturday from 11h00 to 14h30. It’s unclear why it doesn’t open earlier. However, the city says it is working with the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) to extend weekday operating hours.

Once finalised, these new times will be shared with the public. Note that the facility is cashless as a security and time-saving measure. Based on the success of this pilot project, the city also plans to setup additional drive-through locations around the city in coming months.

NOT ONLY CAN YOU RENEW YOUR VEHICLE LICENCE

Furthermore, the mayor says the state-of-the-art facility represents the best of the city’s customer-first reforms. Everything it does is designed to save time and effort for city customers and make everything as seamless and convenient as possible. There is also a new City of Cape Town eServices online portal for key municipal services.

Have you used any of the above eServices in the Western Cape? And can you vouch for them?
