Devastating fire destroys popular Mossel Bay eatery

A devastating fire ripped through La Peron Visskerm, a popular seafood restaurant near the port of Mossel Bay, in the early hours of Sunday morning, just days before it was due to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

The Mossel Bay Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management Service responded swiftly to reports of the fire, which broke out around 04:30.

The first fire unit arrived at 04:44, with back-up from the Groot Brak crew.

Roof collapsed

However, despite their efforts, the intense flames caused the roof to collapse, and it took nearly 45 minutes to bring the fire under control.

“The fire was fierce and required a concerted effort from our teams to control,” said the Mossel Bay Municipality in a statement.

The fire is believed to have started in the restaurant’s kitchen and butchery areas, although the exact cause is still under investigation.

Owners Corné van der Walt and Dietlof Henn expressed their heartbreak over the incident.

“We are in a state of shock, especially as this happened so close to the December period,” said Henn.

Favourite among locals

The restaurant, known for its laid-back atmosphere, ocean views and fresh seafood, has long been a favourite among locals and tourists alike.

Its 10th anniversary celebration, planned for next weekend, has now been cancelled, and the business has closed indefinitely.

The fire has prompted an outpouring of support on social media, with community members and loyal customers offering condolences and words of encouragement to the owners.

As the investigation continues, the loss of La Peron is being felt as more than just the destruction of a restaurant – it’s the loss of a community hub woven into the fabric of Mossel Bay’s coastal charm.
