American rapper accuses Tyla of stealing song concept

South African singer Tyla has found herself at the centre of an unexpected feud after American rapper Yung Miami accused her of stealing a song concept.

YUNG MIAMI VS TYLA

The controversy erupted on social media when Yung Miami tweeted that the South African singer had allegedly copied the idea for her upcoming single titled Chanel.

Yung Miami, real name Caresha Brownlee, claimed that she played her unreleased track Take Me to Chanel for Tyla.

The South African star then announced her own single with a similar title and theme, according to Hot New Hip Hop.

TYLA AND ‘CHANEL’

The rapper took to X (formerly Twitter), writing that someone had “ran off” with her song.

She then later hinted that the South African singer was the culprit by tweeting, “Take me to Chanel > put me in Chanel”, according to Complex.

Shortly after, Tyla announced her single Chanel, sharing a snippet in which she sings, “Say you love me, put me in Chanel.”

TYLA’S FANS COME TO HER DEFENCE

Fans were quick to draw parallels between the two tracks, sparking debates across social media about originality and artistic inspiration.

The controversy has drawn massive attention in South Africa, where Tyla’s fans have come to her defence. Many argued that Tyla’s Chanel has a distinctive amapiano and Afrobeats sound.

This is far removed from Yung Miami’s American trap style.

Others suggested that lyrical overlaps in pop culture are common, given the global fascination with high-end fashion brands like Chanel.

SOUTH AFRICAN TALENT

For South Africa, the situation underscores Tyla’s growing influence on the international music scene. Tyla continues to position herself as one of the country’s most successful music exports.

Despite the backlash, industry watchers believe the controversy may only boost anticipation for her release. This may draw even more global attention to South African artistry.

As fans await Tyla’s official response, the dispute highlights how local artists are now key players in global pop conversations. This further cements South Africa’s presence in the modern music landscape.
