Residents in Gauteng should brace for scorching temperatures and potential fire hazards this Sunday, 26 October.
According to forecaster Joel Guy, the province will experience “sizzling hot” conditions, with temperatures peaking around 33°C to 34°C in Pretoria and Bronkhorstspruit.
Guy explained that while the cold front will bring rainfall to coastal regions, Gauteng will remain mostly dry and extremely hot.
“We have a warning for your Sunday for high fire danger conditions for parts of the North West, Free State, and eastwards into Gauteng,” he said.
“People should be cautious around any open flames or outdoor activities that could trigger fires.”
Thunderstorms are expected to move east, while Gauteng is under heat
While most of Gauteng will bake under the heat, parts of the southwestern region may experience isolated late afternoon showers. The South African Weather Service noted that the cold front will trigger thundershowers over the South Coast and parts of the Eastern Cape, which will later move eastward toward Gauteng’s outer areas.
“Thundershowers will start to push eastwards into the southwestern areas of Gauteng,” Guy added.
“However, much of the province will see partly cloudy skies and hot conditions throughout the day.”
Fire safety and health precautions
Authorities are urging residents to avoid open fires, ensure that gardens and fields are not overly dry, and to stay hydrated during peak heat hours. The combination of strong winds and high temperatures increases the likelihood of wildfires spreading out of control.
Guy warned that “fire danger conditions remain a major concern for Gauteng” and advised the public to remain alert and follow weather updates throughout the day.
