India booked their place in the final of the Women’s World Cup – to be played against the Proteas Women – after claiming a stunning win over defending champions Australia by five wickets on Thursday.
Against all odds, the India Women’s team chased down an imposing 339 to set up a final clash with South Africa on Sunday, with Jemimah Rodrigues hitting 127 not out to guide her side to a record run-chase in a thrilling second semi-final of the Women’s ODI World Cup.
India will face South Africa in the final at the same venue on Sunday (11:30 SA start time), with both teams eyeing their maiden World Cup crown.
Earlier in the tournament, South Africa claimed a narrow win over India in the pool stages, but they will know that this is going to be a whole new ball game.
Proteas Women set for battle against India
The Proteas Women come into the final off the back of an unforgettable performance against England, which saw Laura Wolvaardt smash 169 off 143 balls.
“It still feels a bit unreal,” Wolvaardt said on Wednesday. “This is something you dream about as a kid – getting a century in a World Cup. It’s a very special day and I’m so glad we won in the end.
“This has to be at the top of my career. To win this against such a strong bowling side, this is right up there.”
