EFF visits survivors, families of members killed in crash

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leadership visited the survivors and families of the 10 members who were killed in an accident along the R34 near Vryheid. Secretary-General Marshall Dlamini and other members paid their respects to the victims’ loved ones and those hospitalised.

Taking to X, on Wednesday, 18 June, the political party expressed deep sadness about the deaths and offered unwavering support to those affected by the tragic accident. The bus, carrying party members who were returning from the EFF’s Youth Day event in KwaZulu-Natal, collided head-on with a truck. Investigations suggested that thereafter, the truck struck the side of the bus.

In a statement, the party said the victims died in the line of duty and their memory will be honoured. The Red Berets are also working with authorities to assist with the identification process.

ANC STANDS IN SOLIDARITY WITH EFF

The African National Congress (ANC) mourned the loss of those killed in the bus accident. The party members said their thoughts are with the EFF during this painful time. They also wished those injured a speedy recovery.

Meanwhile, KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma said a comprehensive investigation into the accident must be conducted. He said SAPS and the Road Traffic Management Corporation will establish the cause of the accident. Duma also said that the survivors have given different versions of events following the accident.

“There are allegations that the bus driver tried to overtake. Other survivors have alleged that the bus driver fell asleep on the steering wheel,” said Duma.

He also urged citizens not to speculate at this stage. The KZN MEC said he is working with the national government to ensure that plans are strengthened to move cargo from road to rail.
