Kaizer Chiefs have turned their focus to strengthening their goalkeeping department ahead of the 2025/2026 season, following a turbulent campaign plagued by inconsistency in goal.
Head coach Nasreddine Nabi has made it clear that stability between the sticks remains a top priority. As part of this push, Chiefs could soon be offered the services of Nigerian goalkeeper Japhet Opubo, who has steadily built a strong reputation in Nigeria’s domestic league.
Uncertainty in goal forces Chiefs into action
Last season, Bruce Bvuma, Brandon Petersen, and Fiacre Ntwari all struggled to cement their place as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper. Each had moments of brilliance but failed to maintain consistent form. This instability heavily contributed to the club’s defensive vulnerabilities and ultimately proved costly.
With Ntwari reportedly seeking a move away from Naturena, Amakhosi’s technical team has intensified its search for a dependable shot-stopper.
“Japhet Opubo is a top goalkeeper who has proven himself in Nigeria over the past few seasons and he could be a good addition at a big club like Kaizer Chiefs,” a source revealed.
Nwabali link lingers but Opubo emerges
While Chippa United’s Stanley Nwabali has long been linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs, fresh reports now indicate that Opubo could become a surprise candidate to fill the gap.
“His representatives are assessing options for him. And there is a possibility that he can be offered to Chiefs,” the source added. Highlighting the growing interest around the Nigerian shot-stopper.
With pre-season preparations looming, Chiefs may act swiftly to secure their goalkeeping future. And Opubo could be the surprise name to answer the call.
