Five killed in horrific multi-vehicle crash in Eastern Cape

At least five people have been killed in a multi-vehicle crash involving two trucks and a bakkie on the N10 in the Eastern Cape.

The provincial Department of Transport confirmed that the deadly collision occurred on a remote stretch of the road between Cookhouse and Gqeberha on Sunday, 30 November.

Eastern Cape Department of Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose said emergency services remained on scene late as the situation was still unfolding.

“We note that the remoteness of the area and poor cellphone network coverage are contributing to delays in the flow of information from the crash site.

“We are working closely with law enforcement, EMS, and other stakeholders to gather verified details as quickly as possible. Further updates will be shared as soon as clearer information becomes available,” Binqose said.

The road had to be closed to traffic while recovery teams and investigators combed the scene of the horrific crash.

MINISTER OF TRANSPORT LAUNCHES FESTIVE SAFETY

The Eastern Cape crash happened as Transport Minister Barbara Creecy officially launched the 365-day Arrive Alive Road Safety Campaign in Kroonstad, in the Free State, on Sunday, emphasising that safer roads depend on every driver, passenger, and pedestrian making responsible choices.

Creecy called on all South Africans to take personal responsibility for reducing crashes and fatalities on the country’s roads as the 2025/26 festive season begins.

During the launch, Creecy said the theme for this year’s campaign, ‘It Starts With Me’, reflects the critical role of individual behaviour in preventing loss of life.

“We have chosen this theme to highlight the point that each and every one of us has an important role to play in reducing road accidents and road fatalities,” Creecy said.

She stressed that most crashes are preventable and linked to human behaviour.

“Drivers, pedestrians and passengers make important choices on the roads every day. When we make the right choices, we arrive alive,” she said.

Creecy said the festive period required heightened vigilance, as millions travel for holidays, family gatherings and year-end celebrations.
