Real vs fake Christmas trees: Which is better?

Today is 1 December, which officially marks the start of the festive season. For most folks in South Africa, the merriment is in full swing as soon as the Christmas tree is put up and decorated.

Indeed, there’s nothing that screams “Christmas spirit” more than a tree bedecked in glittery tinsel, sparkly baubles and multi-coloured lights, topped with a star or an angel (and surrounded by presents at the bottom).

For a natural touch, some Christmas enthusiasts opt for real trees; however, others prefer the artificial kind. But which is the better option? Let’s compare:

REAL CHRISTMAS TREES: ROOTED IN TRADITION

When it comes to Christmas trees, using and decorating a real tree – usually pine or fir – was a core tradition for centuries. That is, until artificial trees made their debut in the 20th century.

Nevertheless, a real tree simply looks better and adds to the festive air. What’s more, they offer environmental benefits: they are biodegradable, which means that they can be recycled or reused for composting or mulch. They also absorb carbon dioxide, just like regular trees and plants.

Downsides, however, include maintenance – namely, watering and cleaning. It’s a pain having to clean up pine needles that your tree sheds as it’s being transported, decorated or if it’s in the process of deteriorating. And, if not watered properly, the tree can dry out, thus turning it into a fire hazard.

The worst part is that you can only use a real tree once. This can be frustrating, especially if you forked over lots of rands for it.

FAKE CHRISTMAS TREES: ARE THEY WORTH BRANCHING OUT?

Artificial Christmas trees have become commonplace during the festive period. Shops in Mzansi offer a variety of these artificial evergreens, albeit usually for exorbitant prices.

Despite the costs, you can’t fault the range of styles. Some come adorned in their own lights and decorations, while others are painted in shades of white to evoke that wintery wonderland feel. Plus, there’s no need to water or clean up after these trees, which can be used multiple times. Ultimately, it’s pretty much a cost-effective alternative.

Still, as pointed out by Homify, “most artificial trees in contemporary times are made with metal and polyvinyl chloride.” In other words, they’re not environmentally sound for recycling. Components may also contain lead, which could present a health risk for children and pets.

Overall, artificial trees just look fake. They simply lack the character, feel and quality of a real tree. It certainly doesn’t help if the tree is poorly manufactured, which heightens the chances of the false leaves shedding or their branches falling apart at the slightest movement.

WHAT TREE SHOULD YOU GET?

Much like choosing to have Christmas lunch at home or at a restaurant, there’s no right or wrong answer when it comes to deciding between a real tree or an artificial tree. It’s entirely dependent on your preference.

If you want to go for an authentic look and you don’t mind the extra maintenance, then a real tree is for you. Or, if you’re aiming for something stylish and reusable, then it’s worth spending extra pennies on an artificial tree.

At the end of the day, folks, it’s not the tree type that matters during Christmas; it’s gathering around it with the people you love that matters the most.

That, and as long as there’s ample room for presents underneath it!
