Cape Town Silly Season: Nearly 100 drunk-driving arrests made in a single week

City enforcement agencies made nearly 100 drunk-driving arrests in the past seven days – accounting for just over a quarter of total arrests made over the same period.

According to the City of Cape Town, enforcement agencies made 387 arrests in the past week, up from 355 the week before.

Of these, 98 motorists were taken into custody for driving under the influence, confirming officials’ fears that Festive Season drinking habits are once again spilling onto the roads.

Drunk-driving trend not limited to traffic offences

The City’s Public Emergency Communication Centre also reported a 50% spike in assault cases over the past weekend, highlighting how alcohol is fuelling both crime and interpersonal violence as Christmas and year-end celebrations ramp up.

JP Smith, Mayco Member for Safety and Security, urged Capetonians to rethink their festive drinking habits before tragedy strikes.

“Alcohol rivals comparison when it comes to being the thief of joy,” he said.

“We’re meant to be entering a joyous time of year, yet the statistics show this will not be the case for some.”

“There are so many alternatives to drunk-driving – make use of a designated driver, or simply don’t drink if you know you’ll be driving.”

He also cautioned the public against bringing alcohol into beaches, parks, and other public spaces, warning that it will be confiscated and fines issued.
