Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero appears poised to survive yet another motion of no confidence after a late-night meeting on Monday resulted in the withdrawal of the planned attempt to oust him.
The motion had been tabled by a grouping of smaller coalition partners styling themselves as the Minority Governing Parties (MGP).
Tensions eased
However, sources within the coalition say tensions eased during Monday’s meeting, leading to an agreement to retract the motion.
“From now on, we agreed that we will solve our problems amicably and not through motions,” a coalition source reportedly said.
Meanwhile, several additional motions are also expected to be withdrawn.
These include motions previously lodged against former Johannesburg mayor Thapelo Amad (Al Jama-ah), Yongama Zigebe (UDM), and Lubabalo Magwentshu (ATM) – all Section 79 committee chairpersons who were behind the initial move to unseat Morero.
No confidence
In retaliation, the ANC had tabled counter-motions of no confidence against the trio, escalating political tensions in the metro.
Councillors had been scheduled for a two-day sitting this week, though the full agenda for the meeting remains unclear.
What is expected, however, is that all motions will be formally withdrawn during Tuesday’s council session.
This marks the second time this year that Dada Morero has survived a no-confidence bid, reinforcing his position as he also prepares to contest his role as the ANC’s regional leader in an upcoming conference.
Who is Dada Morero?
Sello Enoch Dada Morero is a South African politician who has been the Mayor of Johannesburg since 16 August 2024, a position which he previously held for 25 days, from 30 September 2022 until 25 October 2022 when the erstwhile mayor, Mpho Phalatse, was reinstated through the courts.
Morero is the regional chairperson of the African National Congress in Johannesburg.
