Two teachers have been killed and another injured following a shooting at Ntabankulu Primary School in the Eastern Cape, sparking chaotic scenes as pupils fled the school in fear.
The Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDoE) confirmed that two educators died at the scene, while a third was taken to Ntabankulu Medical Centre.
Children flee in panic
According to the SABC, Lungisile Mzanywa, Head of Communications at the Ntabankulu Local Municipality, described the incident as traumatic, with learners running from the school and attempting to stop passing vehicles for help.
“It was a very chaotic situation. Parents are still trying to locate their children across town, at shops and along the roads. It was a deeply traumatic experience for the children,” Mzanywa said.
Former teacher identified as suspect
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the shooting occurred at around 12:00, when a former teacher at the school allegedly cut through the perimeter fence to gain access to the premises.
Police said the suspect was out on bail for sexual assault charges involving pupils and had previously been barred from entering the school.
“The suspect proceeded directly to the school kitchen, where he opened fire on three educators. Following the shooting, the suspect turned the firearm on himself,” said SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana.
The suspect died at the scene.
Investigation underway
Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including a possible breach of bail conditions.
“The scene has been cordoned off for forensic processing,” Mzanywa said.
Acting Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, extended condolences to the families of the deceased educators and wished the injured teacher a speedy recovery.
Psychosocial support activated
The ECDoE has activated psychosocial support services for learners, educators and affected families.
Head of Department Sharon Maasdorp condemned the shooting and confirmed that counselling and debriefing services would be provided through the Alfred Ndzo East education district.
“This incident occurred during lunchtime while educators were gathered in the staff room. The department will ensure that all affected parties receive the necessary support,” Maasdorp said.
Police remain at the school processing the scene. The department has confirmed that classes will resume on Monday, following the provision of trauma support.
