The African National Congress (ANC) has emerged victorious in the latest municipal ward by-elections of 2025 in its strongholds, the Eastern Cape and Limpopo.
The elections were held in the Eastern Cape, Limpopo, and the Northern Cape on Wednesday, 3 September.
ANC WINS IN LATEST BY-ELECTIONS
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) said the party retained the seats it won in the 2021 local government elections in Limpopo and the Eastern Cape.
In ward 4 in Emalahleni Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape, the party retained the seat it won in the 2021 local elections with 92.17% of the total votes cast, compared to 84.99% in 2021. The voter turnout was 36.32%.
Likewise, in ward 34 in the Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality in Limpopo, which is also the ANC’s stronghold, the party retained the seat it won in the 2021 local government elections, with 78.67% of the total votes cast, compared to 75.60% in the 2021 elections. Voter turnout was 49.66%.
DA ALSO SECURES VICTORY IN THE NORTHERN CAPE
The ANC is not the only party that emerged victorious in the latest by-elections. In ward 4 in the Siyancuma Local Municipality, in the Northern Cape, the Democratic Alliance (DA) won a seat previously held by an independent candidate (Willem Jouke Van Bergen) in the 2021 local government elections, securing 56.11% of the total votes cast, compared to 39.31% in 2021. Voter turnout was 61.16%.
