ANC summons Mathabatha over Limpopo resignation

The ANC has summoned Limpopo chairperson Stanley Mathabatha to Luthuli House in Johannesburg to explain why he stepped aside and his position on the “erosion of party values.”

Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula will meet with Mathabatha to discuss the issues raised, followed by a meeting with the Limpopo provincial leadership on Thursday.

Mathabatha Cites Misconduct, Declines Leadership

Mathabatha requested to step aside as ANC provincial chairperson in Limpopo, citing concerns about misconduct and a departure from the party’s core values.

In a letter dated 1 September, he pointed to widespread unethical conduct and a breakdown in organisational integrity. Particularly surrounding the recent regional conferences in Vhembe and Waterberg.

The ANC confirmed receipt of the letter and said it would address the matter.

Party Dismayed by Social Media Announcement

The ANC expressed displeasure that Mathabatha’s letter first appeared on social media rather than through official internal channels.

“The ANC registers its dismay that this correspondence first surfaced on social media before internal party protocols were observed. We reiterate that proper organisational procedures must always be followed, and internal discipline respected. As guided by the constitution of the ANC,” the party said in a statement.

Concerns Over ANC’s Performance

According to IOL, Mathabatha’s resignation comes amid widespread complaints from party members about corruption, opportunism, and the ANC’s failure to deliver on commitments.

Over the weekend, NEC member Bathabile Dlamini urged party leaders at the Waterberg regional elective conference to focus on renewing the ANC, rather than squabbling over power.

She warned delegates to avoid securing less than 30% support in the 2026 local government elections.

Should Mathabatha’s resignation prompt the ANC to confront corruption and restore its values in Limpopo?
