Bafana face new threat as Benin join protest over ineligible player

Benin are the latest national team to demand that FIFA deduct points from Bafana Bafana.

This comes after South Africa fielded Teboho Mokoena in a FIFA World Cup qualifier match against Lesotho in March. The 28-year-old was ineligible to play against the Crocodiles; however, he did feature in the match as Bafana won 2-0.

Lesotho lodged a protest a few days after the match but according to FIFA, the protest was supposed to be made within 24 hours after the match concluded.

Benin wants FIFA to punish Bafana

After Lesotho complained, it was Nigeria that also demanded that South Africa be docked points. With the Super Eagles and Lesotho unlikely to qualify for the World Cup, Benin have since entered the chat.

The West Africans defeated Lesotho 4-0 to climb to second in Group C. If Bafana were to be docked three points, then they would be level on points with Benin on 14.

“Thank you CAF_Online for congratulating on our victory. We kindly request a fair review: please reconsider the 3-point deduction against South Africa and respect suspension rules. Let the spirit of the game decide qualification,” Benin tweeted following their win against the Crocodiles.

Benin head coach, Gernot Rohr was pleased with his team and felt the West Africans have a good chance of overtaking Bafana for first place.

“With 14 points, we not only have the chance to finish first in the group, but we can also end up among the best runners-up,” Rohr said as per Soccernet Nigeria.

“The team has become balanced: it doesn’t concede goals, it fights together, and it also has technical resources. We’re seeing young players who are confident, and we have hope — without being overly optimistic.”

Benin looking to challenge Bafana for top spot

“We know Rwanda and Nigeria well, the latter of which we’ve already beaten,” the Benin coach added.

“As for them, we don’t know if they’re still in a position to qualify. If they’re not, maybe it’ll be less difficult”
