Bafana, Gayton respond to PSG player’s ‘bid to play for SA’

Despite being touted as being AI-generated, Minister of Sport Gayton McKenzie and Bafana Bafana have both reacted to a viral video of Georgian soccer star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia claiming he has South African roots, which qualify him to play for the country at the FIFA World Cup

The player – who is signed to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) – claimed that he was “done” with his birth country.

Speaking to Soccer Beat, Gayton McKenzie reacted to allegations that Georgian player Khvicha Kvaratskhelia claimed he was eligible to play for South Africa via his ancestry.

The Minister of Sport said: “We don’t want those things, we have our players. We must go with the people that got us there”.

Unlike Gayton, the South African national team appeared to entertain the idea of recruiting Kvatskhelia.

On its official TikTok account, Bafana Bafana posted a clip of the PSG player with South African flag emojis pasted across the screen. The clip was set to Kurt Darren’s hit song, Kaptein.

The admin behind the page poked fun at the rumours, Kvatskhelia was interested in being a part of the squad, asking its followers: “What is his South African name?”
