Eastern Cape police have arrested three suspects in connection with the murder of Xoliseka Lali, Chief Whip of Emalahleni local municipality in the Chris Hani District.
The 43-year-old was gunned down by unknown suspects on Monday, 21 July, between 18:00 and 19:00, at his rented apartment in South East Village, Westbourne, Komani.
SUSPECTS ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH MURDER OF EMALAHLENI CHIEF WHIP
Following intensive investigations by the Eastern Cape Provincial Serious Violent Crime unit, critical information was pursued which led investigators to Mthatha.
On Tuesday, 28 July, three suspects – two males and one female aged between 37 and 42– were apprehended.
According to reports, a senior official in one of the municipalities in the Eastern Cape is among the suspects.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gama said the suspects were taken in for questioning and have been formally charged with murder and will appear before the Queenstown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 30 July.
PROVINCIAL COMMISSIONER COMMENDS SWIFT RESPONSE
Meanwhile, Eastern Cape acting police commissioner, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso has commended the swift and coordinated response of the Provincial Serious Violent Crime unit, whose diligent follow-up on leads resulted in these arrests.
“We assure the community that all investigative avenues are being pursued to ensure justice is served,” Kupiso added.
