The Acting Minister of Police, Professor Firoz Cachalia, calls for the investigations of political killings to be strengthened.
He was speaking on the sidelines of the South African Police Service (SAPS) annual Commemoration Day.
The event is held to honour the police officers and reservists who lost their lives in the line of duty.
CUSTODY OF POLICE DOCKETS CRITICAL, SAYS CACHALIA
Cachalia was speaking to eNCA when he was questioned about the police dockets that are set to be returned to the Political Killings Task Team. The acting minister said the custody of the dockets is critical as the investigation into the political killings continues.
“We need to strengthen the investigation of political killings because we are not now dealing with ordinary crime; we are dealing with organised crime. Systematic attacks on political and administrative leaders, our political institutions. So, more is going to have to be done, especially as we go into the local government elections,” said Cachalia.
27 FALLEN OFFICERS HONOURED AT UNION BUILDINGS
Meanwhile, Cachalia also delivered the welcoming address at the Union Buildings at the event. The officials honoured 27 members who died in the line of duty.
“Their names will now be forever engraved on the honour roll behind us, not merely as names carved in stone, but as powerful reminders of courage, sacrifice, and service to the nation,” said Professor Cachalia.
He added that the loss of a police officer is not only a loss to their family, their colleagues, or their community but a profound loss to the entire nation.
