Cape Town launches first drive-through licence renewal facility

This is thanks to the City’s first drive-through licensing facility, officially opened in Brackenfell.

Located on the corner of Reservoir and Kruispad Roads, the new centre promises to cut waiting times, with renewals completed in as little as five minutes if paperwork is in order.

The service currently operates Mondays to Fridays from 11:30 to 19:30, and Saturdays from 11:00 to 14:30. The City has confirmed it is working with the Road Traffic Management Corporation to extend weekday hours even further.

“This new facility will cater exclusively for the renewal of motor vehicle licences. To ensure a more efficient service, it is cashless and accepts only debit and credit card payments,” said Mayco Member for Finance, Councillor Siseko Mbandezi.

He added: “The drive-through aims to make life easier for motorists – you simply drive up, pay by card, receive your new disc and be on your way. Initial tests show the process can take less than five minutes.” Motorists who received renewal notices via SMS need only present the message to complete the transaction.

The City has stressed that no cash will be kept on-site and urged residents to keep an eye out for additional innovations, including more drive-through facilities under consideration.

The launch follows a string of service upgrades designed to streamline customer experiences. Among them is the City’s online booking system, which allows residents to secure appointments for vehicle licensing, account payments, general enquiries and payment arrangements at selected municipal branches. Plans are underway to expand the system further.

With Brackenfell’s facility now open, the City hopes to position itself as the most trusted and convenient vehicle licence renewal agent in South Africa – and save motorists both time and hassle on the road.
