Cape Town unveils new ‘PSL-standard’ community soccer pitch

The new soccer pitch in Fisantekraal is designed to give local players and fans a top-class sporting experience.

The R13.7 million project, completed over 18 months, forms part of the broader Fisantekraal Recreation Hub.

The hub already includes a library, recreation centre and social development hub, making it a central space for learning, recreation, social support and healthy living.

So far it has served as a base for seven netball clubs, rugby, girls’ futsal, and hosts fitness and after-school programmes. It also offers activities for seniors.

The perks of a synthetic soccer pitch

What sets the new soccer facility apart is its durability and accessibility. Unlike grass fields, synthetic turf can withstand heavy use and stay playable year-round – even during drought conditions.

The pitch comes complete with player and spectator seating, fixed goal boxes with netting, and secure perimeter railings. This makes it a home ground fit for both community tournaments as well as grassroots talent development.

“This new pitch is an investment in our youth, our community and our future,” said Mayco Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Francine Higham.

“I’m calling on every resident to work with us to care for this facility by using the booking system so we can prevent overuse, picking up litter, reporting vandalism, and keeping it safe for future generations.”

“We encourage the community to make the most of and protect this wonderful resource for all.”

A gift to the community

Ward Councillor Francois Berry echoed the call. He urged local clubs to see the pitch as more than just a playing surface, but as a place where young people are inspired to dream bigger.

“To our local football clubs – this is your home ground,” he said.

“To the community of Fisantekraal – this pitch belongs to you. Let us protect it, cherish it, and make it a lasting source of pride for generations to come.”

The City hopes the investment will boost grassroots football, give young players a safe and professional environment to train in, and encourage more residents to lead active, healthy lifestyles.
