Cape Town has been voted the world’s “most affordable” luxury destination in 2026, according to Travel & Leisure magazine.
However, residents beg to differ….
CAPE TOWN VOTED ‘MOST AFFORDABLE’ TRAVEL DESTINATION
According to a report published by Travel & Leisure magazine, Cape Town claimed the top spot as an “affordable” luxury destination.
With its golden beaches, mountain views, five-star hotels, fine dining, and other attractions, the city has positioned itself among the world’s best tourist hotspots.
The magazine shared: “There, opulent 5-star hotels start at just $199 (R3 300) per night, and hour-long spa sessions can be booked for just $50 (R800).
“Going out to eat also won’t cost an arm and a leg: the study found a three-course meal in the city will only set travelers back $23 (R380), a beer typically costs $3 (R50), and a coffee comes in at $2 (R33)”.
The publication listed attractions such as Boulders Beach, the V&A Waterfront, the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, and the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden as must-see places.
Apart from Cape Town, other “affordable” luxury destinations included the following:
- Hamilton, Bermuda
- Muscat, Oman
- London
- Riviera Maya, Mexico
RESIDENTS: NOT AFFORDABLE FOR US
The report has been met with opposition from Cape Town residents, who have bemoaned the influx of tourists and the high cost of living.
Vuyo Mashalaba: “This is relative. ‘Affordable’ for those who have dollars, Pounds, and Euros”
Shawn Voges-Shimokawa: “Affordable for who? As locals, we don’t see R55 flat Whites and R250 cocktails as affordable.”
Shawn Taljaard Viljoen: “Ridiculous! While they live lekka ‘affordable’ lives in Cape Town, the rest of the locals hustle 2-4 jobs just to get through the month.”
