Checkers opens latest flagship store in Sandton

Retail giant Checkers has launched its latest Fresh X flagship store at Hyde Park Corner in Sandton, taking over prime floor space previously occupied by Pick n Pay, which closed its store in September 2024 as part of a broader restructuring strategy.

The new store, which opened this week, caters to the high-income shoppers of the prestigious Hyde Park area and brings with it a range of premium features and exclusive offerings tailored to the mall’s affluent clientele.

Hyde Park Corner, located between Sandton and Rosebank, offers 40 000 square metres of retail space and is known for attracting high LSM (Living Standards Measure) shoppers.

Hyprop Investments, which owns the mall, secured Checkers as the anchor tenant earlier this year.

Retail Convenience

The new Checkers Fresh X store delivers on the chain’s promise of upmarket innovation, featuring:

  • In-store Krispy Kreme
  • In-store Kauai
  • Meat Market with restaurant-quality steak and free-range chicken
  • Bakery offering artisan breads and cakes
  • Dedicated health and wellness section
  • Authentic wine cellar
  • Fresh produce section
  • Hot and cold deli
  • Money Market counter

In addition to the Fresh X store, Checkers also opened a standalone Petshop Science outlet within Hyde Park Corner, providing premium pet food, toys, treats, and accessories.

Part of Major Expansion Strategy

The Hyde Park opening forms part of the Shoprite Group’s aggressive expansion plan.

The group has opened 194 new stores across South Africa in the past year, including:

  • 43 Shoprite stores
  • 38 Usave stores
  • 29 Checkers stores
  • 3 Checkers Hyper stores
  • 36 Checkers LiquorShops
  • 45 Shoprite LiquorShops
  • 60 Petshop Science stores (now totaling 144)
  • 10 new Uniq Clothing by Checkers (now totaling 30)
  • 8 Checkers Outdoor stores (now totaling 28)
  • 1 Little Me baby store (now totaling 11)

“We continue to expand our footprint as part of our omnichannel growth strategy designed to extend our reach in adjacent categories where we are currently under-represented,” the group said in a statement.
