History was written in the heart of Vatican City this weekend when Clipse became the first rap act to perform in St. Peter’s Square.
Brothers Pusha T and No Malice shared the sacred stage on 13 September during the Grace for the World concert.
HIP HOP AT THE VATICAN
The Virginia duo, known for their sharp storytelling, delivered The Birds Don’t Sing from their 2024 album Let God Sort Em Out.
They performed alongside American R&B star John Legend. Both rappers appeared in tailored suits, blending reverence with hip hop authenticity, according to Complex.
The groundbreaking show formed part of the World Meeting on Human Fraternity. Co-directed by music icon Pharrell Williams, the concert carried a message of unity and peace.
PHARRELL BRINGS THE CREATIVE VISION
Pharrell, who has worked with the Thornton brothers for decades, called the event “a rare cultural moment where the world stops and collectively tunes in.”
He brought his company ‘Something in the Water’ on board as executive producer. He helped curate a line-up that showcased international talent.
OTHER MUSICAL GUESTS
The night also featured Jennifer Hudson, K-pop idol BamBam, country singer Jelly Roll, Colombian superstar Karol G, and classical great Andrea Bocelli.
Bocelli described the moment at the Vatican as “music from the very heart of Christianity reaching the world with a message of brotherhood and peace.”
His words reflected the mood, as thousands filled St. Peter’s Square. Access was free, though attendees were required to arrive before 8 p.m.
A CULTURAL MILESTONE AT THE VATICAN
For spectators at home, the concert streamed on ABC News Live, Hulu and Disney+, giving South African fans a chance to witness this historic Vatican performance.

This cultural milestone shows hip hop’s reach beyond borders. It also signals how music can bridge faith, race, and backgrounds.
As Pusha T declared afterwards: “Tonight wasn’t just for us. It was for unity, and for the world.”
