Coastal rain and severe thunderstorms expected in KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal’s coastline, including Port Shepstone, will remain mostly cloudy with persistent rain. Temperatures along the coast will hover around 23°C, keeping conditions cool and damp.

Forecaster Joel Guy confirmed the outlook: “Cloudy to overcast conditions with rain showers will dominate the coastal belt, stretching into KwaZulu-Natal from the Eastern Cape.”

Inland Areas at Risk of Severe Thunderstorms

Inland KwaZulu-Natal, particularly areas bordering Mpumalanga and the Free State, will face higher risks as thunderstorms develop later in the day. The South African Weather Service has issued warnings for possible severe thunderstorms, with potential hail and damaging winds.

“Storms over KwaZulu-Natal’s interior could bring hail, damaging winds, and excessive lightning,” Guy said.

Communities should prepare for disruptions in the evening when storm activity is expected to peak.

Broader Regional Outlook

While the coastal regions will stay rainy, parts of inland KwaZulu-Natal could still experience warm conditions before the thunderstorms arrive. Similar patterns extend into Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and the Free State, which are also on alert for severe storm developments.

Joel said that, despite the risks, rainfall may bring some relief to dry inland areas. “These showers could provide much-needed moisture, but residents must remain cautious due to the storm intensity,” he added.
