Cops arrest two men for murder in 33-year-old cold case after father-of-three, 37, went missing from his home

TWO men have been arrested for murder in connection with the disappearance of a father-of-three more than 30 years ago.

John Bowkett, from Doncaster, South Yorkshire, was reported missing by his concerned family in January 1993.

When reports were first made to cops, 37-year-old John had not been seen since July the previous year.

An initial investigation was started by South Yorkshire Police after the dad-of-three vanished.

And a number of separate reviews have since been launched to look into his disappearance over the past three decades.

Today, South Yorkshire Police’s major crime unit revealed two men, aged 64 and 72, were arrested on suspicion of murder.

Detective Chief Inspector Benjamin Wood confirmed John’s family are still desperate for answers following the latest update.

He said: “Two men, aged 64 and 72, have been arrested on suspicion of murder. They remain in police custody at this time.

“John is a dad-of-three and now a grandfather to two children.

“His family have been informed of this latest development and they remain at the forefront of our minds as we progress our enquiries.

“They are desperate for answers and as we release this new information along with a picture of John.”

It comes after a number of searches took place at properties across the country.

Three addresses have been investigated in Barnsley, South Yorkshire, Goole, East Riding of Yorkshire, and Buxton, Derbyshire.

Officers will also be probing Ulceby Vale Quarry, in Lincolnshire, over the coming days.

The site was last searched by cops in 2002.

Releasing an image of John, the force called on anyone with more information to come forward.

It added: “We hope it will jog people’s memories and encourage anyone who may be able to help us to please get in touch.

“Do you know what happened to John? Did you see John around the time he was last seen to when he was reported missing?

“Do you know about his movements around that time or were you in contact with him?

“Any information you can provide, no matter how insignificant it may seem, could prove crucial and for the sake of John’s family.

“We are very grateful to those who contacted us at the time of his disappearance…

“… but if you didn’t and have information which you think may be useful, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.”
