Authorities have confirmed that South African kitesurfer Graham Howes died in a freak accident involving a whale off the coast of Bloubergstrand on Sunday, 7 September.
H was 38.
Following a comprehensive investigation, including three independent autopsies, coroners have concluded that Howes was fatally struck by a whale after kiting out to a pod of whales near Eden on the Bay.
Force of Impact Rendered Him Unconscious
Investigators believe Howes was struck with a force exceeding one tonne, instantly rendering him unconscious and leading to his drowning.
Evidence from the scene included:

- A damaged kiteboard
- An unreleased safety mechanism
- Final footage from onboard and nearby cameras
- The recovery positions of his equipment and injuries
The findings were consistent across all expert reports and pointed conclusively to a high-impact collision with a large marine animal.

He was last seen kiteboarding offshore around 13:00 on the day of the incident.
When he failed to return, a search and rescue operation was launched by the NSRI Melkbosstrand just before 20:00.
Multiple agencies, including air, land, and sea units, assisted in the search, along with private and commercial vessels.
