Orlando Pirates star Relebohile Mofokeng came off yet another good season for the club, ramping up speculation.
Besides performing consistently for Pirates, Mofokeng also got his debut and breakthrough in Bafana Bafana colours in the previous season.
Mofokeng moved up a level for Pirates last season
That had further heightened the hype around Mofokeng, who was already linked with an exit last season. During the campaign last season, the diminutive attacker even attended trials with English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers. In the end, nothing seemed to materialise from that situation. But by the end of the campaign, there were more clubs looking to prize him away from Pirates.
It was reported that all of Glasgow Rangers, RB Salzburg and even Al Ahly on the continent were interested in Mofokeng. Furthermore, there were talks of a potential deal to Barcelona ‘B’ that was doing the rounds. But again, nothing official happened and the 20-year-old remained at Pirates for another season.
After a season where he scored 12 goals and 15 assists for Pirates, his father Sechaba Mofokeng talks him up!
Father believes he can make it at the highest level
“Everyone’s calling.Sometimes I can’t even eat. The phone won’t stop. But we’re not rushing. We’re praying. It’s about timing and readiness. Why can’t he go? He’s done what was needed here. Now let him challenge himself again – new league, new people, new pressure. He can play anywhere – even for Barcelona or Real Madrid. He’s not scared. He just needs a chance.” Said Mofokeng Snr to iDiski Times.
Right time to leave Buccaneers?
It remains to be seen if Mofokeng Jnr will finally leave Pirates for greener pastures in the new season. The Buccaneers have signed two wingers in Kabelo Kgositsile and Tshepang Moremi, is that a sign? Sea Robbers, is this the right time for him to make the step up to Europe?
