Discovery announces medical aid price hikes for 2026 – with SOME good news

Discovery Health Medical Scheme has announced its medical aid contribution increases for 2026, with members facing hikes of up to 7.9%.

But there’s a change from previous years that could soften the blow: The increases will only take effect from 1 April, instead of the usual 1 January.

Key Highlights:

  • Weighted average increase: 7.2%
  • Highest increases (7.9%) apply to:
    • Executive
    • Comprehensive
    • Coastal
    • KeyCare plans
  • 6.9% increases for:
    • Priority
    • Saver
    • Core plans
  • 0% increase for the Active Smart Plan
  • Increases deferred to April 2026, saving members a collective R1.5 billion, or about R1 100 per membership

Savings Breakdown:

  • A family of four on the Classic Comprehensive plan could save over R5 100 due to the delayed increase
  • A family of three on the Classic Saver plan could save more than R2 000

The delayed implementation is made possible by the scheme’s strong solvency, which is projected to remain above 30%, surpassing the 25% statutory requirement.

Discovery attributes this to lower-than-expected claims and strong investment returns.

“This strategic use of excess solvency enables the Scheme to offer members meaningful financial relief without compromising its long-term sustainability,” said Ron Whelan, CEO of Discovery Health.

The Bigger Picture: Medical Inflation Outpacing CPI

Despite CPI sitting at 3.3%, Discovery says medical inflation is still significantly higher due to:

  • Increased utilisation of healthcare services
  • Aging populations
  • Advanced and costly medical treatments

The scheme anticipates an additional 3% to 4% rise in claims in 2026, driven more by usage than by service pricing alone.

“Medical inflation is a global challenge affecting all health systems – not just medical schemes in South Africa,” Whelan added.

New changes for 2026

In addition to contribution changes, Discovery is introducing two major new features:

  1. Smart Saver Series:
    • Targeted at young families
    • Includes Classic Smart Saver and Essential Smart Saver plan options
  2. Enhanced Personal Health Fund Benefits:
    • Members earn funds by completing health goals (“next best actions”)
    • Funds can be used for day-to-day medical expenses

Bottom Line

While the above-inflation increases will likely raise concerns among members, Discovery has cushioned the impact by delaying the hike to April and introducing value-adds that support proactive health management.

Members are encouraged to review their plan options ahead of the new year to ensure alignment with their budget and healthcare needs.
