Jimmy Kimmel will return to late-night television tonight after ABC suspended his show last week.
The broadcaster, owned by Disney, pulled Jimmy Kimmel Live! following his criticism of Donald Trump and MAGA supporters’ reactions to the murder of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk.
BACKLASH OVER DISNEY’S DECISION
Disney faced fierce backlash. Viewers cancelled Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions, using hashtags like #CancelDisney and #CancelABC.
Hollywood stars, unions, and even former President Barack Obama condemned the suspension. By Tuesday, Disney’s stock had lost about 2.39 percent of its value, nearly R 92.6 billion, according to CNN.
The company defended its earlier decision. “We felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive,” Disney said.
EXERCISING THE FIRST AMENDMENT
But media analysts believe business reality forced Disney to backtrack. Professor Susan Campbell explained: “Consumers were exercising their own First Amendment rights and ending their subscriptions.”
ABC will put Kimmel back on air tonight at 11:35pm ET, according to Al Jazeera. In South African time, that is early Wednesday morning.
CRITICISM ON DISNEY OPERATIONS
Sinclair Broadcasting, which owns over 30 US ABC affiliates, said it will not air the show, instead running news. It remains unclear whether Nexstar, another major broadcaster, will reinstate him.
Criticism of Disney’s suspension continues, as Obama warned: “This is precisely the kind of government coercion that the First Amendment was designed to prevent.”
The Democratic National Committee accused Trump’s administration of trying to silence opposing voices.
