Disruptive rainfall and thunderstorms expected in KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal is expected to experience widespread showers and thunderstorms, which will affect the entire province.

Odirile Modipa, a weather forecaster, said, “We are expecting an 80% chance of showers and thundershowers across most of KwaZulu-Natal, with disruptive rainfall in the southern regions.”

The intense system will extend inland, impacting neighbouring provinces such as Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

Cooler Conditions in the Interior of KwaZulu-Natal

Alongside heavy rainfall, inland areas such as Pietermaritzburg are expected to cool down, with a maximum temperature of just 16°C. Durban, however, will remain milder at 20°C.

Modipa noted, “Tomorrow we expect slightly cooler conditions in the interior of KwaZulu-Natal, while the coastline will remain moderately warm with showers continuing.”

Coastal towns like Durban and Port Shepstone may experience highs closer to 22°C, although cloud cover will likely prevail.

Risks for coastal and rural communities

The rainfall poses risks of flooding, particularly in rural areas with limited infrastructure. Roads and riversides could become hazardous, while coastal winds are expected to intensify.

Modipa added, “Residents along the coast should prepare for persistent showers, while communities inland may face disruptive rainfall that hampers daily activities.”
