The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Gauteng has reacted to the recent alleged criminal activity in the City of Tshwane in a case involving two members of South African Police Services (SAPS) Tactical Response Team (TRT) and retired former Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) officer.
The group was apprehended for hijacking a delivery truck carrying goods worth R900,000, using an official government vehicle.
“They carried out this brazen crime using a state vehicle fitted with blue lights, the very tools of law enforcement turned into instruments of organised crime,” the party stated.
According to the EFF, law enforcement has been taken over by criminal syndicates operating under the guise of officers in uniform.
The EFF’s reaction on crime within TMPD
The EFF further accused TMPD officers of crimes committed in Gauteng, alluding to Victor Baloyi’s criminal case.
“The fact that a serving TMPD officer is implicated in such heinous acts proves beyond doubt that the department has been infiltrated and corrupted at the highest level,” the EFF added.
Baloyi, who is alleged to have links with the criminal gang Bafarasai, is wanted for extortion and drug trafficking. He is also implicated in political assassinations, including the murder of councillor Thabang Masemola of Ward 10.
Masemola was fatally shot by assailants in Mamelodi on 8 July 2025.
The Gauteng Portfolio Committee on Community Safety chairperson, Dr Bandile Masuku, condemned the killing. Masuku said the incident is a disturbing escalating trend of political violence in the province.
Provisions to combat crime in Tshwane
The EFF has demanded a full scale action from the Gauteng police commissioner Tommy Mthombeni. The party also called for the conduction of a forensic audit of TMPD and their weapons “…to expose how state assets are being turned against the very same people they are meant to protect”.
