The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has formally introduced a bill to the National Assembly seeking to ban alcohol advertising.
The party’s Commissar, Veronica Mente, tabled the Liquor Amendment Bill, which seeks to amend the Liquor Act of 2003.
In addition to a ban on advertising, the bill aims to prevent the use of brand elements, company names, or sponsorships linked to liquor at organised events.
PARTY SEEKS TO PRIORITISE HEALTH
In a statement, the EFF said the bill would ensure that public health, social stability, and dignity are prioritised.
“We live in a society where alcohol has been normalised and marketed as a lifestyle aspiration. Bright and attractive adverts target even young children, who grow up associating alcohol with success, sport, and leisure,” said the party.
The Red Berets further added that such adverts conceal the harsh reality of excessive alcohol consumption. It claims the true cost of alcohol abuse impacts by society.
EFF CALLS FOR SWIFT PARLIAMENTARY PROCESSING
National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza has been urged to swiftly refer the bill to the Portfolio Committee on Trade, Industry and Competition. The EFF also called on the committee to fast-track the bill’s processing.
The party further appealed to political parties, civil society organisations, and communities to support the bill.
“We urge parents, educators, health professionals, and faith-based organisations to stand with us in ending the manipulation of our people through alcohol advertising. We also call on all stakeholders to actively make submissions during the parliamentary process to ensure the voices of our people are heard and acted upon,” the EFF said.
The party stressed that the bill is not just an EFF initiative but a call to action for the collective well-being of the nation.
