Emergency nine-hour power outage to affect parts of Gauteng

Eskom has announced a nine-hour electricity outage that will affect several parts of Soweto today as technicians carry out urgent work on the distribution system.

The utility confirmed that Diepkloof Zones 1, 2, 4 and 6, along with Orlando East, will be without supply from 8:30 to 18:00.

Eskom emergency work begins

Eskom said the interruption is required to address faults that could threaten local network stability if not resolved immediately. The power utility explained that the outage is part of efforts to ensure reliable delivery in high-demand areas.

In a notice, the utility said the interruption “is necessary to perform essential maintenance on our distribution power lines,” stressing that the work cannot be completed while the lines remain energised.

Residents urged to stay safe

Customers have been warned to remain cautious throughout the outage period. Eskom reminded residents to handle all appliances carefully, regardless of the interruption, to prevent damage.

“In the interest of safety, customers are advised to treat all electrical appliances as live at all times during the power supply outage,” the utility cautioned.

Technicians will work throughout the day to complete the repairs within the scheduled timeframe. However, Eskom emphasised that unforeseen challenges could affect progress.

Apology and possible delays

Eskom expressed appreciation to residents for their patience and cooperation. A spokesperson acknowledged the inconvenience and said the company aims to restore power as soon as the maintenance is completed.

“Eskom would like to thank you for your cooperation and apologises for any inconvenience that the maintenance may cause,” the notice added.

The utility further noted that external factors may influence the schedule. According to the notice, “should circumstances beyond the control of Eskom arise, the planned electricity maintenance may not proceed as communicated.”

Do you believe Eskom is doing enough proactive maintenance to reduce the frequency of these outages in Gauteng?
