Explore Cape Town’s fabulous flower farms

Spring is in full swing, and it’s the perfect time to spruce up your home with some fresh flowers. In Cape Town and surrounding areas, there are plenty of flower farms where you can pluck your own blooms.

Flower farms are a great way to discover unique, beautiful and indigenous flowers which might otherwise be less fresh than their supermarket counterparts or simply unavailable. They also promote employment and boost economic development in underprivileged areas.

What’s more, you can safely pick blooms without breaking any laws!

FLOWER FARMS FOR THE WILDFLOWER SOUL

Here are a few flower farms you can visit in Cape Town and beyond:

1. Jaftha’s Flower Farm, Constantia

Jaftha’s Flower Farm in Cape Town’s affluent Constantia Valley is a family-owned farm that’s overflowing with summer and winter flora, from arum lilies and dahlias to snapdragons and watsonias.

It is also rich in cultural history: in the 1960s, hundreds of Coloured and African families – including the Jafthas, generations of which specialised in growing flowers – were forcibly removed from Constantia and relocated to the Cape Flats and other outlying areas.

Today, brothers Charles and Malcolm Jaftha have returned to their roots, running a beautifully maintained flower farm that offers fresh-cut blooms to all visitors. They also offer guided tours of the farm, from walking through the fields to offering an in-depth history lesson about Constantia and the uprooted families who once inhabited it.

2. Chart Farm, Wynberg

When it comes to Chart Farm in the Mother City’s Wynberg suburb, everything’s roses!

The farm, located next to Wynberg Park, was established by the Garlick family in 1934. It boasts over 6 000 fragrant rose bushes in splashes of yellows, reds and pinks. You can get a bucket from the farm stall and fill it with roses at R10 a stem.

Speaking of the farm stall, you can buy jams, preserves and fruit on-site. Plus, you can treat yourself to some tea, scones and cake at the Chart Farm Café after you’re done picking.

3. JAMESTOWN FLOWER FARM, STELLENBOSCH

Established in late 2020, Jamestown Flower Farm in Stellenbosch has blossomed into a successful flower farm.

There is a wide variety of blooms to pick and choose from, such as snapdragons, sunflowers and marigolds.

Flower-picking prices can be found at the farm stall, where you can also purchase ready-made bouquets. Be sure to bring your own bucket to carry your pickings.

4. ADENE’S FARM FLOWERS, SOMERSET WEST
