If you’re visiting Cape Town at the moment, the weekend markets are a must-visit.
These are ideal for getting a feel for the community and a taste of locally produced goods and delicious fresh foods.
But whether you’re a local too, maybe you haven’t been in a while? Let’s take a look at five markets you can put on your to-visit list.
Neighbourgoods Market (Woodstock)
The Neighbourgoods Market is at the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock. It’s open Saturday from 9:00 to 15:00 and Sunday from 10:00 to 15:00. You can find an assortment of arts and crafts by local artists and designers, everything from clothing to décor.
Food and drinks will keep you satiated all day, catering to a variety of palates, from Halaal, Vegan, Vegetarian, and more. Enjoy weekend vibes here with good music. It’s dog-friendly (with a leash), and there are ATMs available. Card payments are also accepted. While there is parking around, the market also encourages travelling by bicycle.
Village Square Market (Durbanville)
The Village Square Market is in Durbanville in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town. It’s just over a 30-minute drive from the city. It’s open mid-month and on the last Saturday of the month from 9:00 to 15:00. You can find fresh produce, artisanal goods, and more. It’s a space suitable for the whole family. Be sure to visit their website and social media for more details.
Wild Oats Community Farmers’ Market (Sedgefield)
Sedgefield is on the Garden Route in the Western Cape. While it is about a five-hour drive from the city, it’s a perfect getaway spot if you are looking to travel out of the city over the weekend, or simply if you live in the area.
The market is called Wild Oats Community Farmers’ Market, which prides itself on all things local. It is open from 7:30 to 12:00 noon during Summer and 8:00 to 12:00 noon during Winter. Expect “fresh-from-the-field” here, including free-range meats and dairy products.
Oranjezicht City Farm Market (V&A Waterfront)
The Oranjezicht City Farm Market, originally in Granger Bay, will make its way to a new location within walking distance of the V&A Waterfront in October. It’s open on Saturdays from 8:15 to 14:00, and Sundays, from 9:00 to 14:00. It offers a plethora of fresh produce and delicious varieties of meals and treats. It’s an ideal spot for a morning coffee with friends enjoying the gorgeous views of the ocean and surrounds.
Bay Harbour Market (Hout Bay)
Bay Harbour Market is on Harbour Road in Hout Bay. It’s around a 20-minute drive from the city. The market is open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9.30 to 17:00, Fridays from 9:30 to 21:00, and Saturdays and Sundays from 9:30 to 17:00.
You can find a lively community vibe here and enjoy everything on offer. There are reportedly over 100 traders, live music, art, and delicious foods and drinks. Additionally, the market aims to support local artists through various initiatives that give them a platform to showcase their skills.
While there are many more markets in and around Cape Town, these five will definitely be worth a visit. As always, it’s best to double-check opening times and rules before you visit and to ensure that some markets won’t be affected by adverse weather conditions.
